Established in 1938, the International Society for Criminology (ISC) is the oldest and only worldwide scientific organization in the field of criminology. It was set up with the objective to promote activities and research for a better understanding of crime at an international scale, and also helps to promote the prevention of crime as well as improve the procedures used by the various criminal justice systems. The Society enjoys an advisory status at the United Nations and the Council of Europe and participates in the work of UNESCO. Its members occupy major positions in their respective countries (scholars, judges, criminal justice administrators, etc.).

Celebrating its 75th anniversary in 2013, the ISC Board has decided to organise a series of World Crime Forums to discuss various key challenges for criminal justice and criminology all over the globe and propose new solutions. World crime forums have already been planned in Montreal, Washington, Sao Paulo, San Sebastian, Bologna, Johannesburg, Seoul and Brisbane. The Leuven World Crime Forum on restorative justice constitutes part of this global series of events.
